Overview

TalkGlot is a real-time translation product spanning web and mobile. Two people who don't share a language can join the same session — one scans a QR code to hop in as a guest — then talk naturally while speech-to-text and AI translation keep both sides in sync through a live chat.

The challenge

Live translation is unforgiving: it has to feel immediate. Audio has to become text, text has to be translated, and the result has to land on the other person's screen with as little delay as possible — across two platforms, with guests joining cold. On top of that sat a credit-based billing model that had to meter usage without getting in the way of the conversation.

What I built

Tech & approach

The frontend is React, with WebSockets carrying the real-time stream of transcript and translation so the experience stays live rather than request-response. Speech-to-text and AI translation sit behind that, and the whole thing is built to work for both web users and mobile guests joining via QR.

Results & status

⤷ Add a real metric here — sessions run, languages supported, median latency, or active users. One concrete number makes this far more convincing. (See README.)
