MaestroScan
Grade a stack of bubble sheets in seconds — straight from a teacher's phone — then keep classes and student insights in one place.
Overview
MaestroScan is an iOS app built for teachers. Point the phone camera at a bubble answer sheet and it grades it instantly — no dedicated scanner, no manual marking. Around that core it adds class organization and student insights, so grading turns into useful data instead of a chore.
The challenge
Marking multiple-choice tests by hand is slow, repetitive, and error-prone — and the specialised optical-mark scanners that fix it are expensive and tied to a desk. The hard part of MaestroScan was making a phone camera reliable enough to trust: handling angles, lighting, and imperfect sheets, then returning a result fast enough to scan a whole class in one sitting.
What I built
- Camera bubble-sheet scanningReads answer sheets directly from the phone camera and detects marked bubbles.
- Instant gradingTurns a captured sheet into a score on the spot, ready to record.
- Class organizationKeeps students and classes structured so results land in the right place.
- Student insightsSurfaces patterns across results to help teachers see who needs attention.
Tech & approach
Built with React Native and Expo, with a computer-vision / OCR pipeline doing the bubble detection and the camera work tuned for real classroom conditions. I validated on real devices and sheets, iterated on the capture experience until it felt dependable, and handled the full App Store release.
Results & status
- Shipped & live on the App StoreIn teachers' hands, grading real answer sheets on real phones.
- Owned end-to-endDesign, the on-device CV/OCR work, QA on real sheets, and the full App Store release — solo.
⤷ Add a real metric here — sheets graded, time saved per class, accuracy, or active teachers. One concrete number makes this far more convincing. (See README.)
